Motivation Monday: When is 1,600 calories really 1,800 calories?

New nikes

More motivation: Some girls get excited over Jimmy Choos -- my thrill is new Nikes.

I flatlined on the scale again this week but the exciting this is ...

I KNOW WHY!

My goal this past week was, in a word, everything. I would write down every last thing I ate, to see how many calories I really, truly, really, really, really ate.

And it wasn't 1,600.

Most days it was around 1,800 with some days closer to 2,000. Which is perfect if I'm trying to lose weight but not if I'm trying to lose weight.

This may sound idiotic but grapefruit has calories! And so do green beans and broccoli! Those were the kinds of foods that didn't register on my calorie radar and this past week they did. So did my 122 calories of nutritional supplements.

I've also had my Bodymedia FIT strapped to my left triceps all week -- even when I sleep. And while it says I had enough activity to run a caloric deficit , the scale didn't budge.

But no worries!

Obviously I have to do something different to get the scale to move, so this week I'll continue the Everything Project but I'll dial down the meals to get my calorie count closer to 1,500 to 1,600 calories. I'm also going to amp up the walking workouts (with my new Nikes!) and add more strength training.

If you've ever wondered why you can't lose weight, try writing down EVERYTHING. You may be surprised -- I certainly was.

See you on the track!

Funky Friday: It's 'Dynamite' with my favorite baseball player, Cody Ross

Baseball Even though he left the Florida Marlins for the San Francisco Giants, Cody Ross is still one of my favorite baseball players, and he rose even higher in my book with this video. He and pitcher Brian Wilson teamed up with Keenan Cahill, a 16-year-old from Elmhurst, Ill., who has a rare disorder, Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome. Wilson and Ross will be hosting "Dynamite: A Fundraiser for Keenan Cahill" during their game against the Florida Marlins on May 25. So get up and dance with Keenan, Cody, Brian and Lou Seal!

Word of the week: Everything

Write down everything.

Every drop of ketchup, every stick of gum, every baby carrot.

That's what my diet coach and I came up with this week. I've basically been within the same pound or so since August and I'm beyond tired of seeing that number on the scale.

Now that I've been wearing my BodyMedia FIT for a week or so I've found that to lose 2 pounds a week (a lofty goal), I'd have to eat 1,600 calories a day, which is 1,000 calories a day less than my average burn for the day.

I had been following a program that lets you eat unlimited fruits and vegetables but apparently that hasn't been working for me, so everything's going on the list -- grapefruits, salads, baby carrots, the whole shebang.

Slice of life gummies I'm even counting my nutritional supplments, since most of them resemble candy. I regularly have two Adora dark chocolate calcium supplements (30 calories each) and my multivitamin is a gummy variety from Slice of Life (22 calories for two). Add to that my fish oil supplements and I'm already up to 122 calories a day in supplements!

It all adds up. Quickly, too, I might add. When you add EVERYTHING in, you get to 1,600 in the blink of an eye.

I want to really, really see how many calories I can eat and how many calories I can burn to actually lose weight.

I know I'm a superstar at maintaining but that's not the goal right now.

My immediate goal is to get to pre-baby weight by next month, which is the second annual Fitbloggin' conference in Baltimore.

Fitbook_redcoil It sounds a bit obsessive but as you can see, all those "invisible calories" add up. Everything gets jotted down in my Fitbook, then when I'm near a computer it goes in the tracker.

But now I believe I'll get there. I have EVERYTHING on my side.

Motivation Monday: It's on like Donkey Kong!

Bodymedia armband
Today, I'm starting something cool that is sure to get my competitive juices (and exercise) pumping: I'm taking part in the BodyMedia FIT Blogger Test Drive.

I've been test-driving the BodyMedia FIT for the past few days to see the differences between it and the Bodybugg. On the arm they're pretty identical, save for a few color changes. But there is a difference in the software, and I'm really impressed with the BodyMedia's. It logs the same things as the Bodybugg but it also includes a sleep component that lets users analyze the quality and duration of their sleep. Turns out there's a difference between "lying down" and "sleeping."

I also like how it points out your personal bests in exercise and even sleeping (like I need an award for that). I always considered myself a great sleeper but apparently I need to do better with my quality of sleep.

But what I'll be obsessing about is the step counting. All of us Test Drivers will be competing to see who logs the most steps during the month. I'm a little worried since one of the participants has a blog called 26.2 Quest.

I went back to the gym for the first time in months to see how the elliptical would register and was pleasantly surprised with two things:

  1. After a few months away from my fave exercise machine I was still able to go like hell and burn 500 calories in 45 minutes.
  2. The BodyMedia FIT counts steps for the elliptical. I thought the movement of the machine might not register but it does.

So I'm going to be choosing my workouts based on the most bang for the step buck. Tonight my son has an extra long baseball practice, so guess what Mama's gonna be doing?

See you on the track!

Motivation Monday: Back on track, literally and figuratively

Track

April continues to be a thousand times more delightful than March. I lost the 5 pounds I gained last week (water bloat, post steroids, who knows?), and I fit in five days of exercise. And a couple of days I did something that I never would do -- I exercised outdoors in the middle of the day.

Yes, I live in Florida but that doesn't mean I like the weather. I merely put up with it. I'd be happy as a clam in Seattle or some other cloudy, cool place. But what I did last week is stretch my comfort level and ignore my inner voice that told me it was too hot/humid/sunny to walk outside.

Last Saturday, before my kid's Little League game, I hit the track at the park at 1 p.m.. It was sunny and already above 80. Normally I'd be scouting out a shady spot under a tree with my "Baseball Mom Chair," but I kept the chair in the trunk and joined the other walkers and runners on the track. Armed with a full water bottle and an iPod full of Jillian Michaels podcasts, I power walked for 45 minutes and then celebrated with a fresh bottle of water and a shady spot under a tree.

Didn't die, didn't melt, didn't even get sunburned. But I got my exercise in, and the team won. Victories all around.

Get Fit Friday: Talking walking with trainer Jennifer Cohen

Jennifer Cohen headshot Hey, check out the interview I did yesterday with trainer Jennifer Cohen. She's featured on the CW reality show Shedding for the Wedding and is a spokesperson for the third annual Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge, which is May 22 this year. I did the Challenge last year and it was my first-ever 5K. It was great to take part with so many motivated exercisers and exhilarating to cross that finish line.

I talked with Jennifer about how to make exercise a priority and how walking can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be:
